I first stepped into Trinity Christian Centre in August 2000, and became a Christian in December 2000. I backslided briefly when I was serving NS in 2003, before coming back to church in August 2004. I joined Team TCC when I returned to church.
By then, a fledging team had been formed, and it was called "Team UP" in those days, named after the ministry most of the players were in(Uniformed Personnel). As I was organising games for my then team, Pastor Gary invited me to take charge of the church team as well, and I agreed.
It was a difficult beginning, and getting players to even turn up then was a challenge. We did not play as often as we do now, and did not have a standardised jersey. Everyone just wore a blue shirt. In our formative stages we lost almost every game. 2 of them stand out, a 4-0 drubbing by a local church situated in the East, and a 9-0 thrashing by a Korean church team(that contained retired players from the World Cup 2002 Korean team!). In the latter game, the goalkeeper even dribbled our entire team, only to hit the post with his shot. In those days, we would be happy to score a goal, much less win a game.
Things begun to pick up, and by 2006, the odd wins had become consecuetive wins. Teams that whacked us previously now found us tougher to beat. In 2006, when JJ joined me in managing the team, it freed my hands to put into reality the many plans I had for the team. We finally got our 1st set of team jersey(albeit a bit big la, ok. I admit) and our own website. We moved from the old sms call up system to an email based one, and even got in place a system to track individual player statistics!
Moving forward, we are joining our first competition, the Agape Cup, in 2007, and I hope to do well. Our team has also been featured in the Trinitarian magazine, and will continue to be featured in future. I hope to be able to find a sponsor for the team, so that our next set of jerseys in 2008 will be FREE. I also hope to be able to find time to re-do the website to make it look more professional. On top of that, I hope to be able to find more good players in TCC who share the same enthusiasm to come onboard our team.
Looking back, I am grateful for the chance given to me to manage this team, and really, though many people have commented about how much hard work I put in, to me, the sense of satisfaction I get from seeing how this team has grown is more than enough compensation. Especially when we walk out winners after a hard, gruelling game. Seeing how certain individuals have matured in their character and game(especially curbing of vulgarities and violence. Haha. Not aiming anyone) since joining us has also given me tremendous satisfaction. Learning to handle the different problems that never fail to arise has also thought me alot of skills in managing situations and people that I cannot learn elsewhere. In a nutshell, I enjoy my role in this team tremendously. This team has at least a good ten years ahead of it and I look forward to being a part of it!
